Honorable Mention
Rebecca’s Garden
Lia (E. V. Brooks)

Under the trees where you rest
violet shade merges with dapple of willow.
Sun sits breathless
on green
almost asleep.
You link your fingers and pretend he’s gone
away across the lake into the woods-
moving through the fern
until the darkness of bark and shadow
swallow him whole.

You see yourself in the honeysuckle,
clamber over the white-washed walls
to stretch yourself over windows and doors,
suffocate the house with blossom
until it struggles no more.

You give yourself to the garden,
ignore white clenched knuckles
that lay painful on grey bruises.
You pretend the sun never sets,
but hangs low bleeding across the sky
and never feel the cold damp of twilight
cling to your hair,
or see the dragonflies leave the lake.

You stare up at the open window,
will the fire-yellow petals to reach in
twisting green fingers through the darkness
to smother him while he’s asleep.
